It Started With A Pint
Like most good stories, ours started with a beer. A flavorless, watery, metallic alcohol-free beer that our co-founder Bill Shufelt ordered one night. He was working in finance, about to get married, getting serious about fitness, and was searching for alcohol-free options that could satisfy his taste without compromising his lifestyle. If it wasn’t for that fateful beer, we might not be here today. Thankfully, it sent Bill on a mission to create a whole platform of delicious, craft NA beers that even the biggest beer lovers would enjoy anytime, anywhere. He teamed up with our head brewer John Walker and the rest is history.
The Name Says It All
It was inspired by our two core loves - a love for an active, healthy lifestyle and a love for great beer. And since day one, Athletic Brewing’s mission has been to combine them both without compromising on either. Even our logo exemplifies that purpose: a varsity “A” with a wheat twist—active at heart and always thirsty for beer.
CRAFTED ON TWO COASTS
We got our start in Stratford, CT where Bill and John first started test-brewing. They crafted over 100 batches on homebrew equipment to perfect their process and refine their flavors. Once satisfied, they built an entire brewery around it. It was the first of its kind in the country and remains one of only two alcohol-free dedicated facilities in the world. The other is our west coast brewery in San Diego, CA.

Our Beer
We brew loads of styles throughout the year so anyone seeking a alcohol-free option can experience the best in craft beer, in as many ways as possible. The essential Athletic brews - Run Wild IPA, Upside Dawn Golden Ale, and Free Wave Hazy IPA - are available year round. But we also brew seasonal releases, limited edition styles, and collaboration beers that highlight ingredients or flavors from some of our favorite brands.
